FMC AND YMCA PARTNERSHIP ADMINISTERED STATE FUNDED DIABETIC PROGRAM

Having completed their first 10 week program for diabetics, the Fairfield Medical Center and Family Y are gearing up for their second session of classes. The next screening date is scheduled for the week of October 1 with the next class to begin mid October.

In June, the YMCA and FMC completed a 10 week program that saw over 20 people take advantage of the education and fitness program. The Ohio Alliance of YMCAs received a grant from the State Health Department and the Robert K. Fox Family Y was one of 17 YMCAs in the state to receive a partial grant. The funds paid for a screening, education classes and workouts in the Wellness Center with a trainer for 10 weeks.

The participants received hands-on training on how to test their blood sugar levels while reviewing what they ate and what they should buy when shopping for groceries. In addition, each participant got to work with a trainer and develop an individual fitness plan. Following the program, class participants who completed 90% of the session were given a six month membership to the YMCA to continue their "winning" habits.

Comments like, "good information", "it was wonderful working with a trainer", "I learned so much from the classes" were common from our new graduates. Again, the next session is scheduled for October.
